The NGC census is a very useful tool that is made available by NGC to MCI for you, our valued visitors. The information is available on this site with each coin's ID information page (see below). Every different label type for each different coin issue is included as a separate piece of information. The census shows us how many coins have been graded in each different grade for each of the different coin IDs. This information is useful in many ways, but one of the most useful ways is that it helps collectors understand mintage rarity and condition rarity, which are two different terms:

  • Mintage Rarity: Relates to the total number of coins minted for a series as compared to other similar issues. Those with a lower mintage are considerd to have a higher mintage rarity than others. For instance, the 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle has a mintage of just over 30,000 coins, while many of the other proof Silver Eagle issues have mintages well into the hundreds of thousands. The 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle has the highest mintage rarity of all proof Silver Eagle issues.
  • Condition Rarity: Relates to the scarcity of coins of a particular issue in higher grades. Those with fewer coins graded in high grades may be a condition rarity. For instance, because most mint state Platinum Eagles are much more common in MS69 than in MS70, the MS70 coins often trade at values that are multiples of the price of their MS69 counterparts. This is condition rarity.

About the Census Data

You will notice that our census data is displayed in two different columns next to the grade within a coin's ID information page. The first column next to the grade displays the number of coins graded for each grade within that coin's ID for the grade in that row. The next column (with an asterisk in the heading) displays the number of coins graded with the special star designation (where applicable) for the grade in that row. When NGC places a star next to the grade on a coin's label, they are signifying that this particular coin has exceptional eye appeal for that grade.

Accessing the Census Data

To access our NGC census data, simply visit one of the main categories (on the left side of your screen), then visit one of the subcategories listed under the main category. In the coin information table that shows in the sub-category, click on any NGC coin number that displays as a link. If we have census data for that NGC number, it will show (along with Numismedia pricing data) on the right side of the coin-specific page. See the images below for an example.
